On this day, in 1916, the British Royal Navy and the Imperial German Navy met in what was to be the last battlehip-to-battleship fleet action in history. I had a distant relative aboard Admiral Beatty’s H.M.S. Tiger.
I don’t know enough about German warships to say which of the Kaiser’s dreadnoughts this is in the forewaters of the painting. She seems to be giving as good as she’s getting. A friend of mine told me that German warships were designed for “steadfastness” in battle. They were very compartmentalized and they had excellent armor protection.
At this remove in time, let us pause a moment to remember the brave officers and sailors of both fleets.
“In war it is inevitable that only one side can triumph, but honour and self-sacrifice are not the sole attributes of the victors.”
A quote from the late Douglas Reeman, one of my favorite naval authors. He also wrote under the name of Alexander Kent.
Well, while we’re speaking of things nautical… a bit of naughty nautical nostalgia.

Whew. This photo just got me lit-off and totally ready. To make it even worse, I’m playing footsies under the table with the youngest brother, who knows exactly what I’m thinking.

So there are no misunderstandings… I do not yet own my own boat. The sailboat mentioned in previous blogs belongs to my grandfather, and it is a 31 ft. Pearson sloop. He also owns a mid-1960’s Chris Craft Commander and two rowboats we use for fishing and crabbing. The Chris Craft is not used very much because she literally drinks fuel, and he’d rather be sailing. There is talk of selling her and the Pearson and “moving up” to a larger sailboat. The “Bay” is the Chesapeake.
What is it with cute guys and boats?
I dunno, but it’s true.
I have a theory, which I confess is very politically incorrect: Yachting in general tends to be an expensive hobby and pasttime. Yachting tends to draw from the higher reaches of a society, and that means the people tend to be wealthier, better educated, better… well, can I say from a better end of the gene pool? Go to any popular yacht harbor on any summer weekend, and I’ll bet you will be able to see the differences in “the old money” and “the new money.”
These two? Mosdef old money.
Yes boys… this is what’s it’s all about. It’s Manliness at its best.

I think it’s so erotic to see a boy’s hydraulics hanging over his thigh like this. Especially with the leg lifted, so you can slip your hand into that damp secret place under his balls.
